Deanery Downland Walk

By April 2, 2024No Comments

Any members of the Churches of Westbourne Deanery (and friends and neighbours), are MOST WELCOME to join a modest Deanery Walk on the morning of Saturday 8 June, 2024. It will take place in the benefice of The Octagon, beginning and ending in the beautiful village of Walderton.   PO18 9ED

There are two complementary walks planned, both with start point at The Barley Mow public house.    Postcode: PO18 9ED

  1. Park there, if you intend to have a drink/food at the end of your walk; or
  2. elsewhere locally – which might lead you to use the public car park, well used by walkers, at the junction of the road into the valley (towards West Marden and Compton) and the road that leads into Walderton village.

The walks:
At 0930, a rather tougher walk of 4 miles up into the hills above Walderton, circling round Adsdean and returning to the village of Walderton.   This has steep stretches and some underlying chalk, so it is necessary to wear suitable footwear.   The walk should take 2 hours, returning to the Barley Mow.
At 1030, a gentler walk of 2 miles, over fields towards the village of Stoughton and then back, along the road.    There are some modest inclines on the outward leg of this journey.   The walk should take 1 hour, returning to the Barley Mow.

Ideally both groups can unite for a coffee or a beer at around 1130 (which is when the pub opens).

Dogs are welcome on the walks and in the pub, under your own control.  Just be sensitive to the needs of any fellow walkers who aren’t quite so happy with canine company.  I shall be bringing Ziggy, my collie-labrador mix, who knows and loves these walks.

It will help to know in advance of your intended participation.
