Gift-Aid Carry Back Scheme

For some givers, a gift-aid donation can be adjusted so it is claimed against a giver’s tax payments in a previous tax year. This is relevant to those who are self-employed, whose income has reduced, but who wish to continue giving. When completing their self-assessment or tax return, they can examine their giving records against their tax payment records, and establish if they have remaining “tax-to-cover” in Year 1 that has not been claimed against through their gift-aided donations in that year. If this is so, they can carry back any donations they make in Year 2, to apply against their remaining gift-aid allowance from Year 1. For example a giver might not be paying tax in Year 2 due to a lower income, but has left-over tax-to-cover allowance from the previous year, and can therefore continue to be gift-aid eligible for a limited time. Please contact me if you would like to receive a detailed explanation of the rules and process.
