Compton Village (pop. 386) has a vibrant community centred on the four pillars of the village: The church of St Mary, Compton, the local shop and café, the pub and the Church of England primary school. Many children progress from this primary school to the secondary school, Bishop Luffa School, in Chichester.
The economy is predominantly agricultural but many people commute to nearby towns or to London to work. There area a number of small businesses including food producers and building contractors.
Sports and leisure facilities are many and varied. Thriving local groups make use of local sports fields, tennis court, cricket grounds and parish rooms. The community at large may use the newly built school hall in Compton. It supports a popular film club as well as exercise classes etc. Other leisure activities include garden and art clubs, book groups, dining and coffee clubs, as well as informal running, cycling and rambling groups. Two villages are served by a mobile library. A regular bus service between Petersfield and Chichester passes through Compton and other villages in the same valley.
