The Octagon Parish

Donating to the Octagon

Image description

One of the objectives of the Chichester Diocesan Strategy for the  five years starting in 2020 is that the church in Sussex should become more generous, and that means that we all should become more generous. Some people still think that the Church has a bottomless pit of money, so putting a pound or two in the plate when they come to a service is enough to keep it going. In fact, of course, that is very far from the truth.

Here in the Octagon we have inherited seven precious church buildings, many of which are several hundred years old. This means that they are expensive to maintain, and we don't just look after them for our own benefit. They are here for the benefit of all who visit them, and we must pass them on to future generations in good condition. In addition, for every service we hold, the building has to be heated, the organist has to be paid, and there are many other running costs. Some of the parish funds are held in the Rector's Discretionary Fund, which is used to help those in need in the parish.

In addition to these local expenses, every church is also obliged to contribute to the Diocese. This money goes towards the Rector's stipend, clergy pensions and other central costs. In case you were wondering, it does not go towards the costs of the cathedral, which has to look after itself. In this parish we are lucky that we are able to meet our liabilities, but there are some parishes - even in affluent Sussex - that will never be able to make ends meet, and we have a duty to help them if we can.

But we cannot do all this just from what we receive in the collection plate. There are a number of ways in which you can help.

Firstly, you can make a one-off or a regular donation to the Octagon by pressing the orange button below. This money will go to the general purposes of the Octagon. If you would rather support a specific church or a specific purpose such as the Rector's Discretionary Fund, pleasse contact the Octagon Treasurer, whose details can be found on our Who's Who page, who will be happy to help you.

Secondly, you can donate to the Octagon every time you buy something from Amazon.  First, go to and select The Parochial Church Council For The Ecclesiastical Parish Of The Octagon as your preferred charity.  Then start each shopping session at, and they will donate 0.5% of the net purchase price (excluding VAT, returns and shipping fees) of your eligible purchases. You shop. Amazon gives.

And finally, please remember the Octagon in your will. For more information on how to leave a legacy to the Octagon, please see the Octagon Legacy Policy on the Parish Policies page.
